EDUC 1: Teaching Profession
A message to the future educator: We don’t exist in isolation; we are part of a society that shapes us and, in turn, we help shape it. Our thoughts, values, and actions are influenced by the events and people we encounter. As John Donne famously said, "No man is an island." This principle is equally true for teachers: no teacher stands alone. Consider the many individuals assisting you on your path to becoming a teacher. Soon, you will be called "teacher" by your students, just as they will be called "students" in relation to you.
Teachers often face criticism for societal issues, underscoring the high expectations placed upon us. While the demands of teaching are substantial, the rewards, though often invisible, are profoundly impactful. Your influence on students and colleagues is largely shaped by your personal and educational philosophy. These guiding principles and values act as your window to the world and your compass through life's challenges, governing your decisions, actions, and relationships.

The duties of a teacher are neither few nor small, but they elevate the mind and give energy to the character.

A message to the future educator: Decade after decade, we stand on the threshold of a new understanding of learning and development. The ever-progressing research in psychology and neuroscience has illuminated the incredible capacity of the human brain for continuous growth, fundamentally changing our perspective on education—a perspective that will continue to evolve time and time again. This journey of discovery reveals that learning is a dynamic, cumulative process influenced by our environment and relationships.
For educators, this insight is both a challenge and an opportunity. It is a reminder that our role is crucial, not just in early childhood but throughout a student's educational journey. The adolescent is a critical time for shaping identity. Its brain is particularly malleable. Intelligence is not a fixed trait but something that can be developed with effort and perseverance. Our task, then, is to create engaging and challenging learning experiences that spark curiosity and foster a lifelong love of learning.
Remember, the goal is to empower students to take ownership of their learning. Fostering a growth mindset and providing the right support are just two of the many ways we can help them overcome obstacles and achieve their full potential. As we shape their minds, we also shape their futures.
