A Critical Analysis of DepEd Lesson Exemplars

Drawing from our own experiences and lessons learned, we present a detailed critique of a sample DEPED lesson plan to highlight effective strategies and areas for improvement. Our goal of the critique is to refine our teaching methods and enhance the quality of our lesson plans, ensuring that every classroom session is engaging, informative, and impactful.

The Lesson Plan

Our Critique

Reflection

From our analysis and critiquing activity, one of the insights we acquired is the dynamic nature of lesson planning. Much like the analogy that goes, “teaching is similar to flying an airplane while building it,” we recognized that a lesson plan is not a static document but a living entity that evolves in response to the educational environment. This understanding emphasized the importance of flexibility and adaptability in teaching. We learned that effective lesson plans should be deliberately crafted to accommodate the diverse needs of students and the changing dynamics of the classroom. This insight tells us the importance of continuous reflection and adjustment, ensuring that the lessons remain relevant, engaging, and effective in promoting student learning.

We came to understand how important it is to ensure that the content, activities, and assessments are fit for their learning outcomes. It should not only include elements of thinking skills such as remembering, understanding, analyzing, applying, evaluating, and creating, but also emotional and coping aspects like attitude and ethical behavior in the learning process.

From this lesson, we can understand that integrating learning resources with students’ lives, interests, and the world offers great benefits, such as not only increasing the level of attention paid to the information but also increasing the chances of the students retaining it long-term.

Additionally, the activity highlighted the importance of collaborative critique and the value of diverse perspectives in refining lesson plans. Engaging in a group analysis allowed us to identify strengths and areas for improvement that might have been overlooked individually. Feedback from peers can lead to more comprehensive and balanced lesson plans. This collaborative approach mirrors the real-world context of education, where input from colleagues and stakeholders can enhance teaching strategies and outcomes. Ultimately, the analysis reinforced the idea that effective teaching requires both meticulous planning and the ability to adapt and grow through continuous learning and collaboration.

This project has highlighted the necessity of aligning lesson plans with critical thinking objectives and fostering student engagement. We now understand that a well-structured lesson plan is essential for breaking down intricate topics into manageable, comprehensible segments. By incorporating diverse methods and strategies, we can create a more dynamic and interactive learning environment. These varied approaches cater to different learning styles and keep students actively involved in their learning process, thereby deepening their understanding and retention of complex concepts.

Furthermore, the insights encourage us to adopt a more iterative approach to lesson planning, where feedback from students and fellow teachers will be crucial. We hope that from this worksheet, we can approach our lesson plan design to not only be comprehensive but also adaptable to the evolving needs of our learners. We aim to develop a robust strategy that prioritizes student engagement and critical thinking, ultimately leading to a more effective and enriching educational experience in subjects that are traditionally challenging to teach and learn.
